    parents visit to Portland

awnings are pulled out, originally uploaded by vwcub.

So the day after getting home from San Francisco, my parents show up in their RV for a week visit. It hasn't been too bad so far, but I also didn't take any time off, so I haven't been around them all day either. They arrived in the afternoon and parked the RV in my driveway. I didn't think they would be able to get in there, but when I got home there it was! Holy shit I couldn't believe it.
So during the week I took them around my neighborhood and on Saturday we went to Saturday Market and to the rose garden. Today we just hung out and my mom is cooking dinner for my friends Mike and Don.
So far so good, two day left to go. click the pic to see the rest of the pictures

    Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

the possibility of teaching a college class
My assistant at work Jessie, decided that I should go and speak to the dean of the Portland Art Institute to teach a class for designing bags. I gave it some thought and decided I'd go down and check it out. I've thought about teaching but had never explored it. Well the dean of the college loved me and can't wait to get me in a classroom! I have some paperwork to fill out and I need to see if I can adjust my work schedule to make it work for this quarter, but it looks like I'll be teaching a class pretty soon, and the best part is, I'll be able to get my masters while teaching through the school which will then allow me to teach additional classes and higher level classes. I think it could be really cool!

do I have to go back?
I had a follow up appointment with my doctor this morning. I had to have some blood work done and unfortunately the tech wasn't able to hit a vein in my left arm this morning, so I left with bandaids on my left arm and I have to go BACK monday morning to have them TRY AGAIN! She wouldn't even try my right arm since it had the I.V. in it and its all bruised looking.
ugh. I am so over needles right now.

    Lab Results from the ER
So I called the ER since they hadn't called me back with the lab results from the hepatitus tests. I am happy to say that all the tests came back negative. So that can be ruled out. But now the question remains, what actually happened and why is my liver acting up. I'm going to see my regular doctor tomorrow for more bloodwork and tests.

    How I spent my sunday

me in er .jpg, originally uploaded by vwcub.

I don't even know where to begin with this one....

It all started back on Thursday, I was kinda feeling a little crummy and things weren't quite working properly but it wasn't anything that I had never encountered before and decided to go into work like any other day. I drank plenty of fluids went home early and only had breakfast that day in an effort to keep from really getting sick. Friday my problem was still unchanged, but I went into work and I was super hungry and decided to eat at lunch. It seemed to work out well so I thought I just needed a little Pepto Bismal to get myself right again. I went ahead and had dinner, and it made me a little grumbly but I wasn't extremely worried or anything so I went out friday night and hung out for a while. It was during this time that I really started not feeling well, my belly got really distended and I started to sweat a bit, I thought, "oh man this is not good!" I quickly said my goodbyes and went home where I proceeded to be by the toilet more than in my bed that night. I never was able to get anything to come up, it wasn't quite bad enough for that. I finally fell asleep around 6am after taking about half a bottle of Pepto.
When I woke up Saturday, I kinda felt ok. It was like some weird nightmare dream, and I was hungry again. I drank liquids instead and had some solid food for a late lunch/ dinner. Again I felt kinda ok and since I didn't do much that day went out to hang out again, and around midnight left because I thought I was hungry but after a couple of bites of a burger I quickly realized it wasn't really hunger pains I was now having. Again I spent the night up at the toilet but this time the pain was so horrible and my stomach was stretched so tight I forced myself to get whatever was in me out. This process was quite unpleasant and involved my now old toothbrush. I'm sure you can imagine the rest. This process kept me up all night as my body just refused to let go of whatever was in me. By 6am I was done and exhausted, slept for a couple of hours and woke up, felt pretty much the same and called my friend Mike to pick me up and take me to the ER to be checked out because I wasn't going to go through another night of this.
At the ER after explaining what happened to me to the doctor, he felt my belly and asked a few questions. He was a little concerned by where I was feeling the most discomfort and soon I had an IV in me giving me some kind of interesting pain medication, an anti nausea drug and some sort of antibiotic. I also had blood drawn to see what was going on there. Well, it turns out my liver enzymes were totally off the charts, and so the doctor ordered a cat scan of my belly and an ultra sound of my liver and gall bladder. He told me I could have gall stones and if that was the case, I'd be admitted and go directly into surgury. So it was important to find out what was going on in me. By this time the pain medecation was in full swing and I was feeling GREAT! So I walked down to the ultrasound dept much to the delight and suprise of everyone there to have my belly looked at.
The jelly they squirt on you is really warm, and I swear if that lady had pressed any harder with that thing it would have gone IN me! She kept asking me if it hurt and I thought, "well if you didn't press so hard maybe it wouldn't." So I was holding my breath on my back watching the video monitor while she did her thing. I have to say, it was really cool. She took some measurements and then it was done. So I walked back to the ER and had more blood drawn and was told to drink this thick white stuff that smelled like Tang. The nurse told me it would probably take me a while to drink it because everybody complains it tastes bad. Well, apparently she didn't realize just how hungry I was by then, after having evacuated my stomach last night and not having eaten since the day before, I gladly downed the shake, which, really wasn't so bad. It had a flavor like tang also. It was a Tang-esque smoothie. YUM!
It was fourty five minutes later when the doctor came in to tell me had asked for more blood to be drawn for a hepatitus test. He thinks I may have hepatitus A because of my elevated liver enzymes. He then tells me the CAT scan will give a more clear picture of what is going on in me as my spleen is enlarged. So off to get a CAT scan I go. Now if you have never seen this machine, it is straight out of a science fiction show. It easily measures twelve feet across, and is at least six feet tall but tapers in depth from about three and a half feet to maybe a foot and a half at the top. The entire machine is covered in a slightly textured plastic sheath that is rounded along the top and has no sharp corners. On both the right and left sides are matching keypads arranged in an eliptical manner to look very star trek like. At the center of the machine is a large round opening a little larger than a man hole cover. A very long bed sits in front of this opening lowered almost to the floor. As I lay down on the bed I see some light up icons at the top of the hole in the contraption. I was asked if I had ever had an X-ray before that required an injection, I nervously said "no, am I going to have another needle poked into me for this?" She told me no, she could use the I.V. already in me for that. "Thank God, man." However I was being injected with Iodine for this x-ray. Iodine is heavier than your blood and will cause some minor discomfort, pressure, and you will experience some warmth from your head to your groin. Holy cow batman! That was soooo weird!! My whole torso went totally warm! and my groin was totally putting off a ton of heat, it was so crazy. the bed then raised up and slid into the opening, the icons I had seen on the top of the machine started to light up. A green happy face light up. It was then I noticed the center of the opening was made of clear plastic and watched a large mechancial ring start to spin around me. It was covered in coils and and little boxes and appeared lopsided, but it started spinning very fast. Then a voice said "Please hold your breath" and an Icon of a man's face appeared with puffy cheeks indicating not to breath. I held my breath and the bed slid forward and backward through the opening, kind of quickly. The voice came on again telling me to breathe and the little man's face is replaced with the normal face again in green. This happened several more times and during it I got a little flash back from the movie Contact with Jody Foster. For a moment I thought I was going to be shoved into another dimension feeling a warmth and pressure on my torso from the Iodine in me. Once it was finished the coil inside spun down and the bed came out and lowered to the floor once more. I wanted to do it again.
Unfortunately I was walked back to the ER and had to wait another thirty minutes before the doctor came back to see me. He wanted to keep me overnight for observation because he wasn't entirely sure I was really ok to go home that day. It took a little persuading but he relented and allowed me to go home after spending another hour and a half watching TV in the ER.
I went in at 10am and left the ER at just after 5pm. Mike came back and picked me up and drove me home. I will find out tomorrow what the results of my hepatitus test are, and I have to schedule an appointment with my regular doctor for another blood test to check my liver at the end of the week. How much fun is that?
